Could Stem Cell Cream Be Future of Face Care?

Just imagine being able to clone your own skin, creating brand-new cells that are undamaged by age, sun or pollution.

It would be the Holy Grail of skincare, the answer that every woman over the age of 30 has been looking for.

And the technology, which centres on stem cells, could be available in Britain in a matter of weeks.

 

In embryos, stem cells form the basis of every cell in the human body; in adults, they regenerate damaged tissue.

It might sound like science fiction, but the controversial new frontier in antiageing uses creams containing laboratory synthesised ingredients to stimulate dormant stem cells in the skin and transform them into new tissue.

This process would usually occur only when the skin has been severely damaged.

So, rather than going under the knife in the pursuit of a firm, youthful, glowing face, you may be able to grow your own new, wrinkle-free, baby-soft skin simply by applying a face cream.

First to the market in Britain will be ReVive's Peau Magnifique, which will be priced at a staggering £1,050. It is already available in the U.S. and launches exclusively in Space NK in April.

Manufacturers claim it uses an enzyme called telomerase to 'convert resting adult stem cells to newly-minted skin cells' and 'effectively resets your skin's "ageing clock" by a minimum of five years'.

The product claims long-term use 'will result in a generation of new skin cells, firmer skin with a 45 per cent reduction in wrinkles and increased long-term skin clarity'.

Peau Magnifique is the latest in a line of products developed by Dr Gregory Bays Brown, a former plastic surgeon, who realised that surgery had its limitations.

'You can get rid of a turkey neck and take out bags, but surgery cannot give you the succulent soft skin you had in your 20s,' he says.

In the course of his research into healing burns victims, Dr Brown discovered a substance called Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) that is released in the body when there is an injury, and, when applied to burns or wounds, dramatically accelerates the healing process.

He believed the same molecule could be used to regenerate ageing skin and went on to develop ReVive, a skincare range based around it.

Hot on the heels of Peau Magnifique will be Amatokin. A price for the British market is yet to be announced, but it sells in France for e190 (about £130) for 30ml, which the makers say should last a month and should be used continuously.

Amatokin is marketed by the same people behind the StriVectin craze.

'Surgery cannot give you the skin of your 20s'

StriVectin was originally developed as a stretch mark cream, but was found to have significant results on ageing skin on the face and was subsequently marketed with the slogan 'Better than Botox?'.

It went on to become one of the best-selling anti-ageing products in the world.

Amatokin is available only through Sephora in France, but a U.S. launch in Bloomingdales is set for April and discussions are underway regarding distribution through Harvey Nichols in Britain.

Like StriVectin, Amatokin has managed to generate a huge pre-launch buzz in the U.S., with a carefully planned marketing campaign that plays up the background of the product and its exclusivity.

The active ingredient in Amatokin was developed in Russia and tested at the Research and Production Centre for Medical Biotechnology, at the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (MHRF).

Its aim was to heal burn victims and surgical patients, but the active ingredient has since been licensed to Voss Laboratories for cosmetic use.

According to Voss: 'Amatokin triggers the skin's stem cell-driven potential for regeneration by broadcasting an SOS message to the cells that damage has occurred and stem cells are needed.

'Amatokin's functional isolates [groups of cells that have been separated out for a specific purpose] have been clinically shown to dramatically reduce the appearance of deep and superficial wrinkles, as well as skin colouration associated with photo-ageing.'

The one big drawback of this emerging technology is the cost.

One of the aspects of Peau Magnifique that is guaranteed to raise eyebrows when it hits shelves is the price tag (£1,050 for a four-week course twice a year).

It's on a par with CrËme de la Mer's Essence: £1,500 for a three-week skincare treatment.

'Yes it is expensive,' says Dr Brown. 'But the telomerase protein costs $4 million a gram and is the most expensive of all the molecules we use in any of our products.'

ReVive refuses to say exactly how much telomerase goes into the vials of Peau Magnifique.

To be fair, if, as Dr Brown suggests, telomerase creates the same effect as laser skin rejuvenation but without the trauma, effectively, you're treating your skin to one session of laser skin rejuvenation every day for 28 days.

Obviously, in reality this would be impossible, but were you able to do it without your entire face melting, it would set you back in the region of £250 a session – that's £7,000 in total.

If – and it's a big 'if' – you can get the same results for £1,050, with no red marks or skin damage, that would be a result.

Louis Rinaldi, of Voss, is not surprised at the cost.

'We could have launched Amatokin two years ago – we had all the studies and the science to back it up then. But we would have had to price it at around £500 an ounce. Instead, we've spent the past two years working out how to manufacture it for less.'

Aside from the costs involved, like all new innovations, stem cell skincare has its detractors.

Jim Frame, a consultant plastic surgeon at the Capio Springfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex, is unconvinced that it really works.

'I've been involved with burns and burns technology over the past 25 years, and although I've looked for the Russian research cited, I can't find any papers or publications that reference it,' he says of Amatokin.

Voss responds: 'The data is confidential. This research was independently reviewed by the top dermatologists in the U.S. and France, and by one of the leading stem cell research authorities in the world.

All found the research "convincing" and are extending their own, independent research into the benefits Amatokin can hold for reversing the appearance of skin damage and ageing.'

Despite this, Frame is worried about the potential side-effects of Amatokin.

'My theory, and I may be wrong, is that they're using growth factors here which could be derived from placental tissue.

'If that's the case, where's the placenta coming from? Is it Russia? What about such issues as vCJD [the human form of mad cow disease] which can't be tested for? Transmission through a cut or cold sore is not out of the question.'

But Dr Brown of ReVive and Louis Rinaldi of Voss refute any suggestion that human tissue is involved.

One of the other concerns surrounding this sort of technology is the potential it has to go wrong.

Once you switch on a cell and encourage it to divide and replicate, how do you switch it off again? Could creams like this cause cancer, which is essentially the result of cells over-dividing?

Those behind the creams say they are no more likely to cause cancer than cutting your finger (and, thus, stimulating the same chain of stem cell reactions to repair the damage).

But perhaps of more concern is the fact that when I asked M. Rinaldi what were Amatokin's limiting factors, he admitted that despite the fact that the cream is already being sold they 'are still exploring its limits'.

'Theoretically, a woman of 55 should be able to get the skin of a 25-year-old,' he says. 'Stem cells are self-renewing, so in theory there are no limits.'

Whatever the potential dangers, if these creams can really improve the appearance of skin, the likelihood is that they will fly off the shelves.

Although there have yet to be any credible studies, some women are clearly going to be delighted by the results.

Carine, 45, tested Amatokin for French Elle magazine earlier this year and reported that after two weeks, her skin was left 'more luminous, more clear and even my naso-labial folds [the creases that can appear from the base of the nose to the mouth] are less visible'.

But critics such as Jim Frame insist that what we're looking at here is no more than wishful thinking.

'It's too simplistic to suggest that one single molecule is behind the process of skin renewal,' he says.

'There's a huge amount we have yet to learn about skin processes.'

The bottom line is that if Amatokin and Peau Magnifique genuinely can do what they claim to be able to, we're looking at the greatest breakthrough in anti-ageing skincare the world has ever seen.

Editor's Note… This article was written in 2007. Now, as of May 2011, Peau Magnifique is $1050 for a 1 ounce bottle!  I haven't been able to find Amatokin for less than $220. Since the publishing of this articles there have been a slew of stem care creams, but most of them are based on plant stem cells.
